Born and raised in Woodstock, Ontario, Nancy’s path took her to the University of Waterloo, then the University of Western Ontario towards a career as a secondary school teacher. Along the way she met Louis Silcox, also with teacher goals. They married and settled in rural Waterloo Region.
Teaching at the secondary level in a number of disciplines—English Media, English as a Second Language and serving as a Guidance Counsellor, Nancy moved on to the post-secondary world and was employed as a Counsellor at both the University of Waterloo and Wilfrid Laurier University.
But creative writing was never far from her path and she initially began her writing career as a columnist for community newspapers the Tavistock Gazette and the New Hamburg Independent. She then accepted an assignment of secondary school columnist with the Waterloo Region Record.
But wishing to take on more in-depth stories of successful and dynamic Canadians, Nancy moved into book writing in 2001 with her first collection of biographies, Roads of the Heart: 50 People who Followed their Passion. A number of chronologies, written at the request of several Waterloo Region Secondary Schools followed--each highlighting the accomplishments of “starry” school alumni—including such luminaries as writer Malcolm Gladwell; B.C. Premier David Eby; NHL’ers Dave and Don Maloney; Olympian Katherina Kubenk; former CTV news anchor Lisa Laflamme and distinguished writers/journalists such as Graeme Smith and John English.
She kept her fingers in the magazine world, she contributed articles ranging from history, visual arts, lifestyle, and entertainment for journals: Grand Magazine, Canadian Art and Antiques, Arabella Design, Canada’s History, and the University of Waterloo Alumni Magazine.
