Nancy Says "I love and cherish animals even more than writing. Our large country home in Waterloo Region has always been a haven for pets. Presently we have a Golden Doodle named Rose; 3 cats: Jasmine, a wily Siamese; Ginger, a Himalayan, and the smartest cat we’ve ever known: Alice a Black Smoke Maine Coon Cat. I’m presently teaching Alice to use the talking tool “Fluent Pet” and she taps 2 commands: TREAT and PLAY. I will be teaching her WALK as the weather gets warmer.
So it’s not surprising that I’ve written 3 books featuring Canadian Pets—and their humans."
This book, written for the Veterinary School at the University of Guelph saw me interviewing 40 well-known Canadians about their own love of pets. I had the fun of talking to such people as: Margaret Atwood, Bob and Arlene Rae, Don Cherry, Jann Arden, Mary Walsh and Kurt Browning, among many other Canadian luminaries.
Talking to “everyday Canadians” about the pets that play a role in their work-a-day world came next. What fun! Donkeys who act as “receptionist” at a psychologist practice in Alberta ; a couple of Maritime salon cats; a Nova Scotia physician whose dog “works” in his waiting room; birds of prey who clear gulls from a Waterloo landfill site; and Vancouver rabbits who help out a yoga classes…..
Far too many stories to tell for 1 volume, so I wrote 2! Of course, all sales of the books went to Canadian animal protection and rescue agencies such as St. John’s Therapy Dogs, Canadian SPCA and Kali’s Wish Cancer Foundation.
